The Panasonic 10x Optical Zoom Lumix DMC-TZ5 digital camera is Panasonic's latest addition to its award-winning TZ-family of LUMIX digital cameras. The DMC-TZ5 packs a 28mm wide-angle, 10X optical zoom Leica DC lens in a compact design, ideal for the active user needing a versatile camera. Combining a 28mm wide-angle lens, which lets the user capture a wider-framed shot when compared to a traditional 35mm camera, with the TZ-Series 10x optical zoom empowers users with expanded range, both wide and far.
With the addition of Intelligent Exposure and Digital Red-eye Correction, Panasonic's Advanced Intelligent Auto mode consists of seven intuitive technologies, all which are specifically designed to help make photo-taking an enjoyable and seamless process unnoticed by users -- helping them to take clear photos. Also new to the TZ5 is the Venus Engine IV, Panasonic's new high-performance image processing LSI. The Venus Engine IV produces higher-quality pictures than its predecessor, the Venus Engine III, by using a more advanced signal processing system. The Venus Engine IV also improves noise reduction, elevates the detection accuracy and corrective effects in both MEGA O.I.S. and Intelligent ISO and reduces the shutter release time lag.
The DMC-TZ5 also incorporates Intelligent LCD, which detects the lighting condition and controls the brightness level of the LCD in 11 fine steps, to offer optimal clarity in any situation, whether dark or light; indoors or outdoors. With a newly developed 460,000-dot high resolution in the TZ5's 3.0-inch LCD, photos can be easily viewed on the display, regardless of the shooting environment. The TZ5, with 9.1 megapixels is capable of recording 720p High Definition motion pictures, and because of its support of SD Memory Cards, is easily compatible with Panasonic VIERA Plasma HDTVs that have an integrated SD Memory Card slot, so viewing photos is simple.

- Leica DC Vario-Elmar Lens with 10x Optical Wide-Angle Zoom
- Leica Camera AG is a camera and lens maker lauded by photographers around the world. In every aspect of precision lens optics -- from polishing techniques to coating technologies to quality standards -- Leica Camera AG remains a world leader. Leica's multi-coating lens process for glare reduction helps to eliminate image fogging and ghosting when shooting in extremely bright light.
The DMC-TZ5 is able to shoot from 28mm at the wide end and 280mm in telephoto, making it is fully equipped for any photo shooting situation. The 10x Optical zoom lets users take close-up shots even when users cannot move closer to the subject, and the wide-angle lens is helpful in situations where users cannot step back or move away.
The DMC-TZ5's DC Vario-Elmar lens features eleven elements in nine groups, with three aspherical lenses, including dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens, to achieve high optical performance while preserving compactness. The dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens represents a major achievement in mass-produced lens elements, and enables the remarkable 28 to 280mm range (35mm equivalent) of focal lengths in this compact body. The lens also includes an extra-low dispersion (ED) lens to minimize color aberration (color bleeding). Inheriting the fine rendering and outstanding quality of the Leica Elmar lens, this easy-to-carry camera delivers beautiful pictures any time, any place.
- 16.9x Extended Optical Zoom
- The DMC-TZ5's 10x optical zoom combines with the 1/2.33" diagonal 9-megapixel effective CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The Extended Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 16.9x power in photos at a resolution of 3 megapixels or less. Using this feature in combination with the 4x digital zoom brings the total zooming power to a remarkable 67.5x (35mm equivalent: 1890.0mm).
- 10x Optical/4x Digital/40x Combined Zoom/67.5x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
- This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with a 10x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. There is even a 4x variable digital zoom*, which, combined with the optical zoom, digitally magnifies images up to 40 times their normal size.
- 1/2.33" 10.7 Total Megapixel CCD With Primary Color Filter
- The effective pixels in the DMC-TZ5 have been increased to 9.1 Megapixels to support enhanced zoom functions. Conventional cameras generally use almost the entire CCD area when recording an image and the angle of view may be altered regardless of the photographer's intention. The DMC-TZ5 CCD area is larger than those in conventional 9-megapixel class cameras, and can reproduce images shot with the lens set in any of three aspect ratios -- 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 -- so users can always capture dynamic, richly expressive shots with a wide perspective. The DMC-TZ5's Primary Color Filter uses the primary colors (red, green and blue) to ensure the correct extraction of color information from the CCD in order to create vivid, rich color images.
- Venus Engine IV™ LSI
- The DMC-TZ5 features the Venus Engine IV. In the Venus Engine LSI, Panasonic improved diagonal resolution by 50% over earlier models by extracting luminance signals from all of the pixels -- red, green and blue. And the Venus Engine IV even goes a step further. By adding the luminance signal from the green pixels in areas with horizontal or vertical lines, Panasonic has raised horizontal or vertical resolution by about 10%. Images are rendered in fine detail and without visible color bleeding. In the Venus Engine IV, the motion detection in the Intelligent ISO Control function has been further enhanced to suppress motion blur even more effectively.
An advanced noise reduction system detects chromatic noise and luminance noise separately. In addition, the Venus Engine IV enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the color bleeding that often happens when NR is used. Together, they let you capture crisp, high-resolution images with minimal graininess even when shooting at a high ISO setting.
Fast Response - 0.005-Second Shutter Release Time Lag With a shutter release time lag of as little as 0.005 second*, LUMIX is literally faster than the blink of an eye. This high-speed response makes it easier to capture the perfect expression on a child's face or a spectacular moment in a sports event.
- MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
- Especially important for a high zoom camera, Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. Panasonic drew on its cutting-edge lens technology to invent Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer). It prevents blurring from shaky hands -- the leading cause of blurry images.
Featured in the entire Lumix line-up since 2005, MEGA O.I.S. has earned such high praise from users around the world that it is a standard feature of digital cameras. In Panasonic's Mega O.I.S., sensors act at a frequency of 4,000 times per second to accurately detect even slight camera movement, such as from unsteady hands, and a corrective lens in the O.I.S. lens unit is shifted to compensate. With Mega O.I.S., it is easier than ever to capture clear, sharp, beautiful images when shooting telephoto shots, indoor portraits, illuminated night scenes or even the scenery you see from a train window.
- Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
- While hand-shake is the single biggest cause of blurry images, it is not the only one. Another problem is the motion blur that can occur when a subject moves as the shot is being snapped. Incorporating Panasonic's Intelligent ISO Control, Lumix cameras were the first in the world to fight motion blur. With Intelligent Image Stabilization -- Mega O.I.S. to compensate for hand-shake plus Intelligent ISO Control to prevent motion blur -- Panasonic has equipped the new Lumix DMC-TZ5 with the industry's most advanced countermeasures against blurring.
The IIC system detects whether or not the subject is moving. If it is, the system automatically raises the ISO setting accordingly, allowing the camera to shoot at a higher shutter speed. If the subject is not moving, the camera shoots at a low ISO setting and captures beautiful, natural-looking images. Intelligent ISO Control is included as one of the corrections in certain scene modes used to shoot subjects that are often moving, such as Sports, Baby and the newly added Pet mode. Simply select the mode that best suits the subject, and Intelligent ISO Control provides the optimal corrections, making it easy to capture crisp, clear photos.
- Large Bright 3-inch Color LCD Monitor With Auto Power LCD Function and High-Angle Mode
- The large 3.0" high-resolution LCD has a total of 460,000 pixels. The difference is easy to see. Its large size lets everyone view the images together, and its crisp clarity is great for both shooting and playback. Under bright sunlight, the Auto Power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in nine steps according to the ambient light intensity. In dimly lit locations, it adjusts the frame rate of live images in two steps according to the ambient darkness. At the highest of these 11 steps, the LCD backlight becomes maximum 1.4 times brighter than normal. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient. The DMC-TZ5 also has a High-Angle shooting function, which makes it easier to check the LCD when you're holding the camera high to shoot over a crowd.
- Intelligent Exposure
- With this new feature, photos will no longer be under- or over-exposed. Instead, the TZ5 instantly analyzes the framed image and adjusts the brightness in areas that are too dark because of dim lighting, backlighting or the use of the flash. The camera will automatically adjust the brightness accordingly.
- Easy Zoom
- Now, zooming is even easier. Even when the zoom is set to a position lower than 10x, the first press of the Easy Zoom button immediately gives you the maximum 10x power of the optical zoom. A second press delivers the maximum 16.9x power of the Extra Optical Zoom.* This lets you bring your subject right up close, easily and comfortably.
- Face Detection
- Panasonic's Face Detection detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure settings so portraits come out clear and crisp. Detecting up to 15 faces, Panasonic's Face Detection can even track a face if the subject is moving.
- HD Component Output
- The TZ5, with 9.1 megapixels is capable of recording 720p High Definition motion pictures, and because of its support of SD Memory Cards, is easily compatible with Panasonic VIERA Plasma HDTVs that have an integrated SD Memory Card slot, so viewing photos is simple. The TZ5 also has the ability to take 1920 x 1080 pixel High Definition-ready photos that perfectly fit a wide-screen (16:9) HDTV. With the newly added HD component output capability, users can also connect the TZ5 model to an HDTV via the optional Panasonic DMW-HDC2 HD Component Video Cable and watch a slideshow complete with mood-appropriate music, choosing from natural, slow, urban and swing.
- Mode Dial With Rec/Playback Mode Switch
- The DMC-TZ5 incorporates a new REC/PLAYBACK mode switch. Use the Mode Dial to choose the shooting mode, and use the new menu display to choose the playback mode. This helps the photographer to instantly switch between record and play modes, and to always know which mode the camera is in.
- 23 Scene Modes to Cover A Wide Variety of Shots
- Portrait Mode: This gives the background a soft focus while capturing the subject clearly and sharply.
- Soft Skin Mode The camera detects the face or skin area to achieve a smoother appearance of the skin than portrait mode.
- Scenery Mode: Capture sweeping vistas in sharp focus.
- Sports Mode: Uses a high shutter speed to catch moving subjects.
- Night Portrait Mode: The MEGA O.I.S. minimizes hand motion at slow shutter speeds, to capture people and night landscapes clearly and beautifully.
- Night Scenery Mode: Allows you to record the nightscape vividly by reducing the shutter speed.
- Self-portrait Mode: This mode makes it easy for you to take pictures of yourself.
- Food Mode: Allows you to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants etc.
- Party Mode: Select this mode when you want to take pictures at a wedding reception, indoor party etc. By using the flash and slowing down the shutter speed, both people and the background can be recorded with a brightness close to real life.
- Candle Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures with a candle-lit atmosphere. You can take successful pictures without using the flash.
- Fireworks Mode: his mode allows you to take beautiful pictures of fireworks exploding in the night sky.
- Starry Sky Mode: By making the shutter speed slower, allows you to take vivid pictures of a starry sky or a dark subject that you could not take in Night Scenery.
- Beach Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures on a beach. It prevents under exposure of the subject due to strong sunlight.
- Aerial Photo Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures through an airplane window.
- Snow Mode: This mode will adjust the white balance and the exposure to show the snow as white as possible.
- High Sensitivity Mode: Select this mode for high-sensitivity processing. You can take pictures at ISO 6400 sensitivity equivalent.
- Baby1, Baby2 Modes: This mode takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When the flash is used, the light from it is weaker than usual. You can set the birthdays of two babies (Baby1 and Baby2). The baby's age can then be displayed when playing back pictures.
- Pet Mode: Because pets often won't hold still, this mode switches the camera to Intelligent ISO Control, which prevents motion blur. If you input your pet's date of birth, its age in months (at the time a photo was taken) is displayed when you view photos.
- Sunset Mode: Emphasizing red tones, this mode is designed to capture clear, vivid shots of colorful sunsets.
- Hi-speed Burst Mode: You can capture a crucial moment with perfect timing in 2-megapixel resolution (with an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9) or 2.5-megapixel resolution (3:2) mode.
- Underwater Mode: This mode reduces excessive blue tone in underwater pictures.
- Multi Aspect Mode: The camera takes pictures in each of the three aspect ratios (4:3, 3:2, 16:9) in one go. And you can reproduce images shot with the lens set from 28 mm to 280 mm in any of three aspect ratios (image quality is automatically fixed to Standard).
- Intelligent Scene Selector
- Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions, recognizes the shooting environment and will automatically select the appropriate scene mode from: Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode. This intuitive technology, helps the user utilize the most common scene modes that are built into the camera, but often go unused, without making any manual adjustments.
- Continuous AF
- The Continuous AF (auto focus) system maintains focus on the subject even without pressing a shutter button halfway, thus minimizing the AF time.
- Digital Red-eye Correction
- This feature helps to eliminate the red-eye problem that sometimes results when taking flash shots at the night. Incorporated into the built-in flash, the camera emits a small preliminary flash before the main flash, detects red-eye and will digitally correct it.
- Two-Speed Zoom
- This function allows you to control the zoom operation in two speeds, Low and High, with the zoom lever. Rotate the lever a small amount for slow zooming, and a larger amount for high-speed zooming. This makes it easy to zoom in and out quickly when you need to, or to slow down for finer zooming control.
- Zoom Resume Function
- The Zoom Resume function lets you decide on your composition before you shoot, so you can be prepared for sudden opportunities like a grand opening event or a photo of birds in the wild. It stores the zoom position (magnification) in memory, so you can shoot with the same zoom setting once the power is turned on again. This helps to make sure you don't miss those great spur-of-the-moment shots.
- Clipboard Function
- The Clipboard function is incredibly handy for the maps and time schedules that are so important when traveling. These documents are cumbersome to hold, but when stored in a bag, they can be difficult to find. By snapping photos of them and adding them to the clipboard, you can retrieve them instantly with the Mode Dial. Because it takes a little time to retrieve images from an SDHC/SD Memory card, the images are stored in their own special folders in the Built-in Memory. You can find them immediately. This lets the Clipboard work like a quick and easy memo function.
- Dual Image Playback
- Displays two images at the same time, one above the other, and offers photographers the chance to compare images.
- 50 MB Built-in Memory
- Take photos even when you don't have an SDHC/SD Memory Card on hand. Just use the built-in memory, then copy the data to an SDHC/SD card or PC later. You can also copy images from a memory card or PC to the built-in memory, and view them on the LCD anytime you like. Plus, the built-in memory capacity has been increased to approx. 50 MB. In addition to providing extra memory when your memory card fills up, this is a great place to store your favorite photos so you can view them anytime you want.
- Large-Capacity, High-Speed Storage Media -- SD and SDHC Memory Card
- The SD Memory Card, the TZ5's media for storing image data, offers both a large capacity and fast data transfer. The camera also accommodates large-capacity SDHC memory cards.
- Five Auto Focus Modes
- In addition to five auto focus modes (1-point, 3-point high-speed, 9-point, spot AF, and 1-point high-speed AF), the Continuous AF function keeps moving subjects in sharp focus, and the AF Assist Lamp helps in dim lighting. This all adds up to easy, accurate focusing.
- Unlimited Consecutive Shooting
- Allows unlimited consecutive shooting up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card.
- Mega Burst™ Imaging
- Incredibly responsive, the DMC-TZ5 captures consecutive shots nearly as quickly as a motor-driven film camera. As soon as the camera's CCD captures the image signal, Panasonic's multi-tasking Venus Engine LSI simultaneously displays images on the LCD while writing data to the memory card, significantly reducing lag time between shots. To capture sudden events as they unfold, Panasonic's exclusive MEGA BURST recording feature enables consecutive rapid-fire shooting. You can snap off consecutive shots at 2.5 frames per second with full resolution.*
- High-speed Burst Mode
- The DMC-TZ5 can fire off up to approx. 6 frames per second in High-speed Burst Mode.* This is great for capturing fast-moving sports or racing scenes. You can take a series of shots, then choose the one you like best and delete the rest.**
- Date Stamp
- You can print the date on your photos. In addition to the ordinary recording date, you can choose Baby or Pet mode from among the Scene Modes to automatically print the age of a child or pet by inputting the birthdate in advance, or use the Travel Date Setting to print which day of the trip each photo was taken on. These dates, which can be helpful when making a photo album, can be stamped on photos whether you print them yourself at home or have a photo shop do them.
- HD Motion Images (30/15 fps) with Audio and Zoom in Motion Picture
- The DMC-TZ5 can record motion images in high-definition (QuickTime Motion JPEG 1280 x 720 pixels at 30/15 fps). The pixel mixed readout method enables bright motion-image recording even in low-light settings. When viewing, these high-resolution 16:9 motion images will provide a remarkable effect on your large-screen TV*. Stunning full-size movies can also be recorded in WVGA (848 x 480 pixels at 30/10 fps) or standard motion images in VGA (6uickTime Motion JPEG 40 x 480 pixels at 30/10 fps). The DMC-TZ5 also lets you use zooming when taking motion pictures. You can take advantage of the camera's max.10x powerful optical zoom in the motion picture recording. In Motion Picture mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SDHC/SD Memory Card. (Up to the equivalent of 2 GB per motion-image recording.) When you set the motion picture quality to VGA 30fps, WVGA 30fps and HD (1280x720 pixels) 30/15fps, it is recommended you use a high-speed memory card with '10MB/s' or greater on the package. Some lens movement sounds may be recorded. WVGA (848x480 pixels) images at 30 or 10 fps can be recorded continuously for up to 15 minutes.
- ISO Sensitivity Settings
- Adjust light-receiving sensitivity just like with a film camera. Available settings: Auto and ISO 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 equivalents (1600 - 6400 ISO equivalent in High Sensitivity Mode).

- Automatically shoot three frames with graduated exposure, one shot overexposed, one shot at correct exposure, one shot unedrexposed. Bracketing amount can be set for 1/3 to 1 EV steps.
- Real-Time Histograms
- The DMC-TZ5's histogram feature functions like a digital light meter, providing a graphic representation of the luminance level of the pixels composing an image. By using the histogram, users can exercise more precise exposure control for quality photos. The histogram can be displayed on the unit's large, 2-inch LCD screen while an image is being recorded and also after a shot has been taken.
- Shutter Speeds from 8 Seconds - 1/2,000 Second
