The Panasonic DMC-LS80 Lumix™ digital camera features advanced, yet easy-to-use settings that help even the entry-level digital photographer take great photos. Encased in a compact design and powered by AA batteries, the LS80 offers convenience and increased usability. With a newly developed Lumix DC Vario lens system, 3x optical zoom and 8.1-megapixel high resolution, the LS80 is feature-rich and user-friendly digital camera, all at an affordable price.
At the core of the DMC-LS80's easy-to-use operation is a comprehensive system of intelligent technologies that operate within the camera automatically, without any extra effort from the user. The Panasonic Lumix LS80 integrates four distinct features aimed at making it easy to capture perfect images. MEGA O.I.S. employs gyrosensors to detect hand-shake and an Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) lens system shifts to compensate, preventing hand-shake from creating a blurry image and instead providing a clear and crisp photo. With Intelligent ISO, the DMC-LS80 digital camera can determine if the photo subject is moving and change ISO setting and shutter speed accordingly, thus enabling a blur-free photo. With Auto Macro, the LS80 automatically switches to the Macro setting when in close proximity to the photo subject, ideal for those extreme close-up shots. Finally, thanks to the Quick AF (Auto Focus) system, the LS80 will focus on the photo subject without the user needing to press the shutter button, producing the fastest shutter speed by minimizing the AF time.
The LS80 includes Panasonic's Intelligent LCD technology, which means the brightness of the LCD automatically adjusts as the ambient light level changes. The 2.5-inch Intelligent LCD also comes with 230,000-dot high resolution, so images are clear, bright and easy to see -- regardless whether it is day or night; inside or outside. With its multi-task image processing capability, the Venus Engine III Processor boasts outstanding response time. The Lumix LS80 is High Definition Compatible, are able to take 1920 x 1080 pixel photos, ideal for viewing on wide-screen (16:9) High Definition televisions. In addition to recording standard VGA (640 x 480), the DMC-LS80 can also record WVGA (848 x 480) motion pictures at 30 frames per second. Fitting a wide-screen HDTV perfectly, these wide-aspect motion images make for impressive viewing.
Panasonic DMC-LS80K Key Features
- Included Accessories
- A/V Cable
- USB Cable
- Strap
- Software CD-ROM: PhotofunStudio viewer, ArcSoft® MediaImpression™, ArcSoft® Panorama Maker™, QuickTime, Adobe Reader, USB Driver
- 3x Lumix DC Vario Zoom Lens
- The DMC-LS80 packages a superb Lumix DC Vario lens with 3x optical zoom (35mm film camera equivalent: 33-100mm) and 8.1-megapixel high resolution into a compact body. A crystallization of Panasonic's advanced lens technologies, the Lumix DC Vario lens comprises six elements in five groups, including three aspherical lenses with four aspherical surfaces, delivering outstanding optical performance. This extremely thin lens is what makes the DMC-LS80 body so compact.
- 3x Optical/4x Digital/12x Combined Zoom/up to 19.1x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
- This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with a 4x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. The camera's 4x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom* may be used together to achieve up to 16x zoom power.
- Up to 4.8x Extended Optical Zoom
- The DMC-LS80's 4x optical zoom combines with the large, 1/2.5" diagonal 8.1-megapixel CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The Extra Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 4.8x power in 3-megapixel photos.
- MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
- Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. The DMC-LS80 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. Unlike digital image stabilization systems, this optical system provides precise compensation with no degradation in image quality. You won't even notice it working -- all you'll see are the outstanding results!
- 2.5" Intelligent LCD Monitor
- The DMC-LS80 incorporates a large, easy-to-see 2.5-inch diagonal LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. This high-quality, 230,000-pixel display makes it easy to see your subject. The DMC-LS80 features the Intelligent LCD function. Under bright sunlight, the Auto Power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in nine steps according to the ambient light intensity. In dimly lit locations, it adjusts the frame rate of live images in three steps according to the ambient darkness. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient. The High Angle mode, which can be accessed quickly and easily via a dedicated button, makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as to shoot over a crowd.
- Intelligent Mode Helps Prevent Mis-Shots
- The DMC-LS80 features an Intelligent Mode that includes four intelligent functions. First is the MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) function, which Panasonic invented to fight hand-shake, the major cause of blurry images. This system, which takes advantage of Panasonic's outstanding lens technology, has long been incorporated into the LUMIX range of cameras. Second, the Intelligent ISO Control function, which is made possible by the Venus Engine III, detects subject movement and automatically adjusts the ISO setting and shutter speed to best suit the movement and light conditions. And the third and fourth intelligent functions are Auto Macro Mode and Quick AF. Auto Macro Mode automatically switches the camera to Macro Mode when it detects that the subject is close while measuring the focusing distance. Quick AF automatically starts focusing as soon as you point the camera at your subject, without having to press the shutter button halfway. All four intelligent functions to act automatically, requiring no additional settings, so you can concentrate on taking those spur-of-the-moment shots.
- Easy Zoom
- Now, zooming is even easier. Even when the zoom is set to a position lower than 3x, the first press of the Easy Zoom button immediately gives you the maximum 3x power of the optical zoom. A second press delivers the maximum 4.8x power of the Extra Optical Zoom.* This lets you bring your subject right up close, easily and comfortably.
- Venus Engine III™ LSI
- The DMC-LS80 is equipped with the Panasonic Venus Engine III image processing engine that gives them even higher image quality and speedier processing than before. The Venus Engine III records at a sensitivity setting as high as ISO 1600 with full resolution, and aids in noise reduction by removing picture noise removed in stages during image processing. The DMC-LS80 slashes the release time lag to 0.005 second minimum by increasing both its circuit speed and the point at which it detects the shutter release signal. This makes Lumix an extremely quick, responsive camera. It lets you capture images comfortably even at a moment's notice and is a pleasure to use.
Despite the significantly increased performance of the camera, the Venus Engine III consumes only 80% of the power utilized by the Venus Engine II and is able to achieve a longer battery life of approx. 180 pictures* with included AA (LR6) alkaline batteries. Because AA size batteries can be purchased almost anywhere, you don't have to worry about suddenly running out of battery power. This is great both for taking everyday snapshots and when you are traveling.
- Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
- Thanks to Intelligent ISO Control, the camera can determine whether or not the subject is moving. If it is moving, Intelligent ISO Control changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. You get clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur even when photographing kids who won't stay still. If the subject is not moving, the ISO sensitivity is lowered to capture beautiful, natural-looking images.
- Auto Macro Mode
- With the new Auto Macro Mode, the camera automatically selects Macro Mode as soon as it is brought up close to a subject, to prevent out-of-focus mis-shot. When it switches the mode, it also immediately changes the icon from "i" to "Macro" to notify the photographer.
- Quick AF
- The DMC-LS80 also features Quick AF. Ordinary AF is activated when the shutter button is pressed half-way, while Quick AF starts operating as soon as the camera is pointed toward a subject. This dramatically reduces the shutter delay time and lets you take pictures quickly. Its super-fast focus is ideal for capturing quick photos of active children and pets. By setting the camera to Quick AF, pictures of sudden shooting opportunities won't be out of focus or blurry.
- 5-Area AF
- In 5-area AF, the camera automatically determines the most appropriate AF area from among five points. This ensures accurate focusing even for difficult compositions. You can also select the AF setting from two patterns -- 1-area high-speed AF and 1-area AF -- according to your shooting situation. Plus, Quick AF makes sure you won't miss those sudden shooting opportunities.
- Mode Dial With Rec/Playback Mode Switch
- The DMC-LS80 incorporates a new REC/PLAYBACK mode switch. Use the Mode Dial to choose the shooting mode, and use the new menu display to choose the playback mode. This helps the photographer to instantly switch between record and play modes, and to always know which mode the camera is in.
- 21 Scene Modes to Cover A Wide Variety of Shots
- Portrait Mode: This gives the background a soft focus while capturing the subject clearly and sharply.
- Soft Skin Mode The camera detects the face or skin area to achieve a smoother appearance of the skin than portrait mode.
- Scenery Mode: Capture sweeping vistas in sharp focus.
- Sports Mode: Uses a high shutter speed to catch moving subjects.
- Night Portrait Mode: The MEGA O.I.S. minimizes hand motion at slow shutter speeds, to capture people and night landscapes clearly and beautifully.
- Night Scenery Mode: Allows you to record the nightscape vividly by reducing the shutter speed.
- Self-portrait Mode: This mode makes it easy for you to take pictures of yourself.
- Food Mode: Allows you to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants etc.
- Party Mode: Select this mode when you want to take pictures at a wedding reception, indoor party etc. By using the flash and slowing down the shutter speed, both people and the background can be recorded with a brightness close to real life.
- Candle Light Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures with a candle-lit atmosphere. You can take successful pictures without using the flash.
- Fireworks Mode: his mode allows you to take beautiful pictures of fireworks exploding in the night sky.
- Starry Sky Mode: By making the shutter speed slower, allows you to take vivid pictures of a starry sky or a dark subject that you could not take in Night Scenery.
- Beach Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures on a beach. It prevents under exposure of the subject due to strong sunlight.
- Aerial Photo Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures through an airplane window.
- Snow Mode: This mode will adjust the white balance and the exposure to show the snow as white as possible.
- High Sensitivity Mode: Select this mode for high-sensitivity processing. You can take pictures at ISO 6400 sensitivity equivalent.
- Baby1, Baby2 Modes: This mode takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When the flash is used, the light from it is weaker than usual. You can set the birthdays of two babies (Baby1 and Baby2). The baby's age can then be displayed when playing back pictures.
- Pet Mode: Because pets often won't hold still, this mode switches the camera to Intelligent ISO Control, which prevents motion blur. If you input your pet's date of birth, its age in months (at the time a photo was taken) is displayed when you view photos.
- Sunset Mode: Emphasizing red tones, this mode is designed to capture clear, vivid shots of colorful sunsets.
- Hi-speed Burst Mode: You can capture a crucial moment with perfect timing in 2-megapixel resolution (with an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9) or 2.5-megapixel resolution (3:2) mode.
- Unlimited Consecutive Shooting
- Allows unlimited consecutive shooting* up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card. The focus and exposure are fixed at the first frame.
- Mega Burst™ Imaging
- Just keep the shutter button pressed to fire off consecutive shots (3 frames per second with full resolution*) of a moving subject or a person's changing facial expression. Then save only the best ones. With a digital camera, you can just delete any shots you don't want. By using the Scene Mode's High-speed Burst setting, you can enjoy extremely fast consecutive shooting of up to approx. 5.5 frames per second in 2.5-megapixel or 2-megapixel recording.
- Motion Images (30/10 fps) with Audio
- The DMC-LS80 can record motion images in WVGA (QuickTime Motion JPEG 848 x 480 pixels at 30/15 fps). The pixel mixed readout method enables bright motion-image recording even in low-light settings. Standard motion images can also be recorded in VGA (6uickTime Motion JPEG 40 x 480 pixels at 30/10 fps). In Motion Picture mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SDHC/SD Memory Card. (Up to the equivalent of 2 GB per motion-image recording.) When you set the motion picture quality to VGA 30fps and WVGA 30fps, it is recommended you use a high-speed memory card with '10MB/s' or greater on the package. Some lens movement sounds may be recorded. WVGA (848x480 pixels) images at 30 or 10 fps can be recorded continuously for up to 15 minutes.
