Panasonic DMC-FZ18S Lumix Digital Camera

Features in Detail | Recommended Accessories | Enlarged Image

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 is an 8.1 Megapixel compact camera with an impressive 18x optical zoom and a premium 28mm wide-angle Leica DC lens. The DMC-FX18 Lumix is one of the first Panasonic digital cameras to offer the revolutionary Intelligent Auto Mode, which includes Face Detection, Intelligent Scene Selector and Continuous Auto-focus functions, allowing users to easily capture clear, professional-quality images in any situation or setting. The Intelligent Auto Mode in the DMC-FZ18 does all the work for you, making photo-taking trouble-free.

When this powerful camera is put into Intelligent Auto Mode, the multi-faceted functions engage automatically, so there is no need to adjust settings every time conditions change. Intelligent Scene Selector automatically selects the appropriate scene mode from the most frequently-used modes such as Portrait, Scenery, Macro, Night Scenery and Night Portrait. The DMC-FX18's Face Detection System helps the camera to focus, set auto exposure and detects up to 15 human faces capturing them clearly and brightly. Continuous Auto-focus allows the camera to keep focus on the subject without having to press the shutter button halfway and provides for the best results out of a shutter chance by minimizing the auto-focus time.

As with the entire 2007 line of Lumix digital still cameras, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 camera sports advanced countermeasures against blurring -- the Intelligent Image Stabilization system, which combines MEGA Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) to compensate for hand-shake and Intelligent ISO Control to detect and adjust for motion blur caused by subject movement. The Lumix DMC-FZ18 also is equipped with a large 2.5-inch, high-resolution LCD with 207,000 pixels, a 0.44-inch Electric Viewfinder with 188,000 pixels, f/2.8 brightness and is powered by the high-quality, high-performance, Venus Engine III, which boasts shooting at ISO 1600 equivalent in normal recording mode.

Wide-Angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit Lens with 18x Optical Zoom Range
The DMC-FZ18 features a compact lens system featuring a 28mm-to-504mm (35mm equivalent) optical 18x zoom with eleven elements in eight groups, including two ED (extra-low dispersion) lenses and three aspherical lenses, including a dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens. The 28mm wide-angle (35mm equivalent) setting lets you easily capture large groups of people indoors or expansive architectural structures and scenes with dynamic width and rich perspective, even from short distances. For macro shots, the wide-angle setting lets you shoot all the way down to less than an inch from your subject, and the telephoto setting can be used as close as 3.3 feet from your subject.

Leica Camera AG is a camera and lens maker lauded by photographers around the world. In every aspect of precision lens optics -- from polishing techniques to coating technologies to quality standards -- Leica Camera AG remains a world leader. Capture broad, sweeping vistas with wide-angle shots. Take portraits that fix the subject in a clear, sharp focus while applying a softer focus to the background. Or aim way into the distance and catch dynamic 18x telephoto shots. With the DC Vario-Elmarit lens, you have a powerful tool for capturing beautiful, expressive images.

28.7x Extra Optical Zoom
The DMC-FZ18's 18x optical zoom combines with the large, 1/2.5" diagonal 8.1-megapixel CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The Extra Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 28.7x power in 3-megapixel photos, and up to 23x power in 5-megapixel photos.
18x Optical/4x Digital/72x Combined Zoom/115x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with a 18x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. There is even a 4x variable digital zoom*, which, combined with the optical zoom, digitally magnifies images up to 72 times their normal size.

* As digital zoom increases, resolution significantly decreases.

2.5-inch High-Resolution Intelligent LCD and Electronic Viewfinder
The Lumix DMC-FZ18 boasts a large 2.5-inch Intelligent LCD with a full 207,000 pixels resolution for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. The camera detects the light condition and automatically boosts the LCD backlighting by 40% when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine, and boosts signals by pixel-mixed readout method when shooting under low-lit situation to secure a clear image in any circumstances. The High Angle mode, which can be accessed quickly and easily via a dedicated button, makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as to shoot over a crowd. The large 0.44-inch in-line Electronic Viewfinder also features high resolution with 188,000 pixels to provide easy, corner-to-corner focusing confirmation even in manual focus mode.
1/2.5" 8.1 Megapixel CCD With Primary Color Filter
The 8.1 mega-pixel CCD (charged coupled device) converts optical data into digital information. It lets you capture crisp, clear images in high resolution, and helps bring out a full range of expressive color and detail. The DMC-FZ18's Primary Color Filter uses the primary colors (red, green and blue) to ensure the correct extraction of color information from the CCD in order to create vivid, rich color images.
Intelligent Auto Mode Helps Prevent Mis-Shots
With the FZ18, you don't have to worry about changing a lot of settings every time conditions change. The FZ18 not only eliminates blurring from hand-shake or subject movement, it also helps you capture perfect people shots by detecting the face and selecting the focus, exposure and scene mode that get the best results. And it's all automatic. The FZ18 even adds a function that begins focusing as soon as you hold up the camera and continuously maintains the focus, so you're ready when the big moment comes.
Venus Engine III™ LSI
The DMC-FZ18 features the Venus Engine III, Panasonic's advanced image-processing engine that can record at a sensitivity setting as high as ISO 1600 with full resolution. Noise reduction is also greatly improved, with picture noise removed in stages during image processing. First, critical noise is roughly undraped, then chromatic noise and luminance noise are separated. The chromatic noise, which has a greater effect on picture quality, is then selectively suppressed to a substantial degree. It also supports a High Sensitivity mode (in 3-megapixel(4:3), 2.5-megapixel(3:2), 2-megapixel(16:9) recording) that lets the DMC-FZ18 record at a setting of up to ISO 6400 -- sensitive enough to capture subjects in near-total darkness without using a flash.

With its multi-task image-processing capability, the Venus Engine III also boasts outstanding response time. Shutter release time lag is as short as 0.005 second and the shutter interval is as short as 0.7 second*. This fast response makes it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment shots together with the quick start-up time of 1.5 second. In burst shooting mode, the FZ18 can fire off three shots per second at full resolution (max. seven images in standard mode, four images in fine mode). It also allows unlimited consecutive shooting** -- you can continue snapping shots until the SDHC/SD memory card is full.

This advanced processing engine is also energy efficient. Its low power consumption means you can shoot around 400 images (CIPA) on a single charge, for a full day of shooting fun.

* Not including the time for AF.
** The consecutive shooting speed varies with the memory card, image size, and image compression mode. The number of shots depends on the memory card size, battery life, image size and image compression mode.

MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
Especially important for a high zoom camera, Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. This feature uses motion sensors, which detects even slight hand movement and integrally links the lens control to the motion of the camera to reduce jitter. Unlike digital image stabilization systems, this optical system provides precise compensation with no degradation in image quality.
Face Detection AF and AE
The new Face Detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change. In Intelligent Auto (iA) mode, the camera automatically begins focusing without even having to press the shutter button halfway, so you can catch even sudden photo opportunities.
Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
Thanks to Intelligent ISO Control, the camera can determine whether or not the subject is moving. If it is moving, Intelligent ISO Control changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. You get clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur even when photographing kids who won't stay still. If the subject is not moving, the ISO sensitivity is lowered to capture beautiful, natural-looking images.
Advanced Scene Modes with Detailed Settings
You can select any of the scene modes used most often -- Scenery, Portrait, Sports, and Night Portrait -- right from the Mode dial. And with each of these modes, you can make more detailed settings to match the shooting conditions and subject. For example, in Sports Mode you can further select Normal, Indoor, Outdoor, or Creative.
Intelligent Scene Selector
When the camera's in iA mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject. With the Intelligent Scene Selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.

* In iA mode, Night Portrait is not identified when the flash is turned off, and Night Scenery is not identified when the flash is set to Auto.

Flexible Auto Focus Modes With Selectable AF Points
When using 1-point, 1-point high-speed AF, or Spot AF mode, you can specify any of 11 AF points. This gives you free-frame shooting even when the subject is not at the center of the frame. When you select Multi-Point AF, you can choose and set the AF area from among five groups. Selectable AF Points not available in 3-point high-speed and Face AF. The Continuous AF function keeps moving subjects in sharp focus, and the AF Assist Lamp helps in dim lighting. This all adds up to easy, accurate focusing.
  • Face AF detects faces for up to 15 people in the frame and automatically adjusts the focus and exposure. Face Tracking function automatically tracks the subjects even if they move.
  • Multi-point AF: You can use the joystick or cursor button to quickly select any of six AF area patterns that combine 3 to 5 of the camera's 11 distance metering points.
  • 3-point high-speed AF prevents the system from mistakenly focusing on the area between two subjects in a horizontal composition.
  • 1-point high-speed AF: The AF time has been dramatically reduced compared with normal speed focusing to achieve outstanding focusing.
  • 1-point AF: Although screen-freeze in high-speed AF is now minimized, you can select this mode to totally eliminate it when you are focusing on a fast-moving subject.
  • Spot AF keys the focus to a small area within the frame.
Manual Focus, Manual Focus Assist, Movable Manual Focus Assist
Select manual focus with the focus select button on the top of the camera, and use the joystick for super-smooth focusing. The FZ18 also has Manual Focus Assist. The image in the center of the LCD or EVF can be enlarged during manual focus for easier focusing. The entire frame image can also be enlarged. This is helpful for macros and other shots that require extra-precise focusing. Movable MF Assist lets you move the part that is enlarged by the MF Assist function to any area of the frame you want.
Unlimited Consecutive Shooting
Allows unlimited consecutive shooting* up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card. The focus and exposure are fixed at the first frame.

* The speed of the consecutive shooting varies depending on the memory card. The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size, battery life, picture size, and compression.
Mega Burst™ Imaging
Just keep the shutter button pressed to fire off consecutive shots (3 frames per second with full resolution)* of a moving subject or a person's changing facial expression. Then save only the best ones. With a digital camera, you can just delete any shots you don't want.

* Max. 7 images in Standard mode/4 images in Fine mode.
Motion Picture Recording with Audio
Using the QuickTime® Motion JPEG format, Panasonic Lumix digital cameras can record moving images with audio at 30 or 10 frames per second and a resolution of 848 x 480 or 640 x 480 pixels. In Motion Picture mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SD / SDHC Memory Card (up to the equivalent of 2GB per motion picture recording).
Instant Close-ups with a Single Switch
Regardless of the Mode Dial setting, you can take macro shots instantly by flicking the switch on the side of the lens to the AF Macro setting. This lets you get as close as 0.4-inch (1cm) from your subject (at the maximum wide-angle setting).

Intelligent Multiple Metering Mode Plus Center-Weighted and Spot Metering
The FZ18's light metering system divides the image into 60 blocks, for improved accuracy in determining brightness, color temperature, and focus information. It also determines the best exposure setting in difficult shooting conditions, such as when there is backlighting. Spot Mode lets you match the exposure to a particular part of the image -- useful for subjects with large brightness variations. Center-weighted and Spot metering is also available.
Real-Time Histograms
The DMC-FZ18's histogram feature functions like a digital light meter, providing a graphic representation of the luminance level of the pixels composing an image. By using the histogram, users can exercise more precise exposure control for quality photos. The histogram can be displayed on the unit's large, 2-inch LCD screen while an image is being recorded and also after a shot has been taken.
