Olympus ED 14-35mm f2.0 SWD Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens
Features in Detail | Enlarged Image
The Zuiko Digital ED 14-35mm f2.0 SWD, which covers a zoom range equivalent to 28mm to 70mm on a 35mm camera lens, is the world's first standard zoom lens to feature a large f2.0 aperture*. Boasting industry-leading imaging performance, this lens is a worthy addition to the Olympus Super High Grade (SHG) lens line. The flagship of the Zuiko Digital series, the ED 14-35mm f2.0 SWD lens was developed to meet the requirements of the most demanding professionals. It includes reliable splash- and dust-proofing, Olympus' exclusive SWD-driven ultra-fast AF system, a mechanically interlocked manual focusing mechanism and a large, petal-shaped hood with a polarizer filter control window.
With its world-class f2.0 aperture providing bright viewing along with a sharp focus and a soft blurring of the background, this lens epitomizes the versatility, power and creative freedom made possible by the Four Thirds System and is ideal for almost any application -- from landscapes and portraits to indoor shooting and photojournalism.

- Ultra-Fast SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive) Autofocus
- Olympus-proprietary SWD technology has enabled an ultra-fast, whisper-quiet, high-precision AF system. Two compact, high-powered SWD devices power autofocus at an ultra-high speed by exciting unique elliptical oscillations, while an ultra-compact 5.3mm x 4.3mm optical encoder detects and controls the lens drive position using direct rotation detection without reduction gear. This enables it to achieve a level of precision that's accurate to 5 microns (5/1000 mm). When used in combination with the E-3 Digital SLR, which offers improved AF computation and lens-body communication rates, the SWD motors provide the fastest focusing speed of approximately 170 ms (0.17 seconds).
- High-Performance 2.5x Standard Zoom Lens
- The Zuiko Digital ED 14-35mm f2.0 SWD is a bright, high-performance standard zoom lens, which covers a zoom range equivalent to 28mm to 70mm on a 35mm camera lens. With its sharp focus and the soft, beautiful background blur appropriate to the large f2 aperture, its features set this high-definition standard zoom lens apart from the rest, making it ideal for almost any application -- from landscapes and portraits to indoor shooting and photo-journalism.
- 18 Elements In 17 Groups, Including 1 Aspherical ED Lens Element, 1 Aspherical Lens Element and 2 ED Glass Lens Elements
- Making extensive use of ED and aspheric lens elements to eliminate chromatic aberrations and distortion, this lens boasts the highest imaging performance in the Olympus lens lineup, performance that is possible only with the FourThirds System. Aspherical glass lens elements help prevent aberrations and distortions common to wide-angle lenses. Compared to an ordinary optical glass lens, the ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lens presents extremely small changes in refractivity in the wavelengths from blue to red. It can improve the imaging performance of lenses by reducing chromatic aberration (a phenomenon caused by the dispersion of light produced by deviation of the focusing point due to color differences) that causes color fringing or contrast degradation.
- Mechanically Interlocked Manual Focusing Mechanism, Full-Time Manual Focusing
- Mechanical interlocking of the manual focusing mechanism allows smooth, natural manual focusing with an extremely high level of precision. Seamless switching from AF to MF is possible at any time thanks to the Full-Time Manual Focusing function.
- Reliable Dust-Proof/Drip-Proof Mechanism
- To support photography in the extreme conditions often faced by professionals, the external finish is sealed at key points for maximum protection from dust and spray.
- Large Lens Hood With Polarizer Filter Adjustment Window
- The lens hood has a sliding window to facilitate rotation of the polarizer filter if one is used.
- Circular Iris
- The use of a circular iris allows the ED 14-35mm F4.0-5.6 to achieve smooth, soft, background defocusing.
- Multi-Coated Lens
- The Zuiko ED 14-35mm lens boasts a multi-coating process which minimizes ghosting and flaring.
- Digital Specific Lens™
- Zuiko Digital lenses are designed to focus light straight into an imager's pixel wells, to fill every pixel consistently. It's optical technology that delivers an image filled from center to edge with rich, accurate color, high contrast and subtle gradation. Designed exclusively for digital photography, Zuiko Digital lenses provide a level of precision that's simply unattainable from a digital body using a traditional 35mm film lens.
The Olympus FourThirds Standard uses lenses which are just as powerful as the lenses previously developed for 35mm film camera systems despite being about half the size. Thus the focal length of the 14-35mm in the FourThirds Standard gives the same angle of view as an 24-120mm lens for a 35mm film camera. It is important to know that this is not a 2x "crop factor" -- Olympus E-System lenses are designed for this size format and have a much higher resolution than lenses designed generally for 35mm film cameras. The benefit: superb image quality but less weight to carry.
Zuiko lenses feature a near telecentric design that ensures that the light hits the photodiodes at right angles, thus avoiding the problem of blurring at the edges of the image, or corner shading, which often occurs when using lenses originally designed for 35mm film cameras. Combined with the high resolution of Olympus Zuiko Digital lenses, this lens design exploits the full potential of the digital camera image sensors. The result is clear photos with strong colors and sharp contrasts right to the edges of the image.
- Smart System
- Zuiko Digital lenses communicate image information directly to the Olympus E-System Digital SLR for a level of exposure accuracy that's beyond the capabilities of a passive lens.
