Olympus ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 SWD Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens

Features in Detail | Enlarged Image

The Zuiko Digital ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 SWD is a high-performance standard zoom lens that covers a zoom range equivalent to 24 to 120 mm on a 35mm camera lens. Special optical glass elements are used to correct various types of aberrations, while the 100 percent designed exclusively for digital photography design ensures high-definition performance with clear, crisp images from edge to edge. This lens also boasts impressive close-up shooting capability, allowing users to shoot from as close as 10 inches (25 cm) throughout the zoom range.

The ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 SWD lens' autofocus is powered by Olympus's breakthrough SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive). Developed to be the world's fastest AF system, this extraordinary autofocus drive provides both high speed and high precision while operating with lower noise than ever. Optimized for use with the E-3 Digital SLR camera, this lens enables the E-3 to demonstrate the full power of its high-speed capability, providing the fastest autofocusing available in the world* using a standard zoom lens.

* Among digital SLR cameras available as of October 17, 2007. When the Zuiko Digital ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 SWD lens is used with the E-3 at a focal length of 60mm (120mm: 35mm equivalent). Based on Olympus' in-house measurement conditions.

Ultra-Fast SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive) Autofocus
Olympus-proprietary SWD technology has enabled an ultra-fast, whisper-quiet, high-precision AF system. Two compact, high-powered SWD devices power autofocus at an ultra-high speed by exciting unique elliptical oscillations, while an ultra-compact 5.3mm x 4.3mm optical encoder detects and controls the lens drive position using direct rotation detection without reduction gear. This enables it to achieve a level of precision that's accurate to 5 microns (5/1000 mm). When used in combination with the E-3 Digital SLR, which offers improved AF computation and lens-body communication rates, the SWD motors provide the fastest focusing speed of approximately 170 ms (0.17 seconds).
High-Performance 5x Standard Zoom Lens
The Zuiko Digital ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 SWD is a high-performance standard zoom lens, which covers a zoom range equivalent to 24mm to 120mm on a 35mm camera lens. Wide angle capability equivalent to a 24mm focal length on a 35mm camera lens makes possible dynamic, wide-perspective landscape photography.
14 Elements In 10 Groups, Including 1 Super ED Lens Element, 1 Aspherical ED Lens Element, 2 Aspherical Lens Element and 2 ED Glass Lens Elements
Aspherical glass lens elements help prevent aberrations and distortions common to wide-angle lenses. Compared to an ordinary optical glass lens, the ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lens presents extremely small changes in refractivity in the wavelengths from blue to red. It can improve the imaging performance of lenses by reducing chromatic aberration (a phenomenon caused by the dispersion of light produced by deviation of the focusing point due to color differences) that causes color fringing or contrast degradation. By improving the optical characteristics of the ED lens, the Super ED lens was created. Super ED offers optical dispersion characteristics comparable to those obtained with fluorite. Optimum use of ED and Super ED lenses makes it possible to effectively correct chromatic aberration and achieve sharp, high-contrast imaging performance.
Excellent Close-Focusing Capability
The focusing system uses floating and inner focusing mechanisms to provide a minimum shooting distance of 9.84 inches (25 cm) throughout the zoom range. This dramatically enhances perspective at the wide-angle end and close-ups of main subject at the telescopic end. With a maximum shooting magnification of 0.28x (equivalent to 0.56x on a 35mm camera lens), this lens out-performs any other in its class (large-aperture zoom lenses with wide-angle coverage).
Mechanically Interlocked Manual Focusing Mechanism, Full-Time Manual Focusing
Mechanical interlocking of the manual focusing mechanism allows smooth, natural manual focusing with an extremely high level of precision. Seamless switching from AF to MF is possible at any time thanks to the Full-Time Manual Focusing function.
Reliable Dust-Proof/Drip-Proof Mechanism
To support photography in the extreme conditions often faced by professionals, the external finish is sealed at key points for maximum protection from dust and spray.
Circular Iris
The use of a circular iris allows the ED 12-60mm F4.0-5.6 to achieve smooth, soft, background defocusing.
Multi-Coated Lens
The Zuiko ED 12-60mm lens boasts a multi-coating process which minimizes ghosting and flaring.
Digital Specific Lens™
Zuiko Digital lenses are designed to focus light straight into an imager's pixel wells, to fill every pixel consistently. It's optical technology that delivers an image filled from center to edge with rich, accurate color, high contrast and subtle gradation. Designed exclusively for digital photography, Zuiko Digital lenses provide a level of precision that's simply unattainable from a digital body using a traditional 35mm film lens.

The Olympus FourThirds Standard uses lenses which are just as powerful as the lenses previously developed for 35mm film camera systems despite being about half the size. Thus the focal length of the 12-60mm in the FourThirds Standard gives the same angle of view as an 24-120mm lens for a 35mm film camera. It is important to know that this is not a 2x "crop factor" -- Olympus E-System lenses are designed for this size format and have a much higher resolution than lenses designed generally for 35mm film cameras. The benefit: superb image quality but less weight to carry.

Zuiko lenses feature a near telecentric design that ensures that the light hits the photodiodes at right angles, thus avoiding the problem of blurring at the edges of the image, or corner shading, which often occurs when using lenses originally designed for 35mm film cameras. Combined with the high resolution of Olympus Zuiko Digital lenses, this lens design exploits the full potential of the digital camera image sensors. The result is clear photos with strong colors and sharp contrasts right to the edges of the image.

Smart System
Zuiko Digital lenses communicate image information directly to the Olympus E-System Digital SLR for a level of exposure accuracy that's beyond the capabilities of a passive lens.
