Olympus SP-565 Ultra Zoom

The powerful and versatile Olympus SP-565 Ultra Zoom digital camera stands out from the crowd with an astounding precision-crafted 20x, wide-angle optical zoom (26-520mm equivalent) and 10 million pixels of resolution for superior image quality in any shooting situation. Olympus has given the world's most powerful ultra zoom digital camera an extreme makeover by creating the new SP-565 Ultra Zoom, a smaller and lighter version with the same amazing precision-crafted 20x wide-angle telephoto zoom lens (26-520mm equivalent), but the ease-of-use of a point-and-shoot camera. Photographers searching for an even more portable and approachable ultra zoom to take anywhere will rejoice in the camera's new form factor, and with 10 million pixels and Dual Image Stabilization delivering superior, virtually blur-free images, the SP-565 UZ is proof that good things do come in small packages. The SP-565 UZ offers the advanced manual controls that experienced photographers demand and find on a digital SLR (single lens reflex), including a zoom ring, hotshoe for external flash, and RAW format capture. At the same time, users can easily set the camera to operate like a simple point-and-shoot with automatic scene modes.

Beyond its impressive lens and pixel count, the SP-565 UZ delivers other key innovations. Dual Image Stabilization combines the benefits of Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization to compensate for both camera shake and moving subjects, ensuring beautiful, blur-free images in any situation. Face Detection continually tracks faces within the frame and automatically focuses, and optimizes exposure for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures even if your subject is moving. Shadow Adjustment Technology enables users to preview and capture images as the human eye sees them, compensating for difficult lighting situations and maintaining detail in highlights while improving the detail in the shadows to produce more balanced photos. Perfect Shot Preview takes the guesswork out of great photography by allowing users to preview and select various photographic effects live on the LCD screen, before snapping the shot.

Olympus SP-565 Ultra Zoom
Designed-to-be-Digital Optics - 20x Optical Zoom Wide-Angle ED Glass Lens, 100x Total Seamless Zoom
First to introduce the Ultra Zoom category in 2000, Olympus once again delivers a designed-to-be-digital optical zoom lens to bring the action closer in an ergonomic body that's easy to handle. The powerful, ultra-compact lens gives you unmatched shooting versatility for sports, travel or everyday photography. The bright, f/2.8-4.5 lens provides the equivalent of 26-520mm focal length (in 35mm photography), with 100x combined total zoom (20x optical and 5x digital). Users can get close to the action with the camera's versatile yet compact 20x super telephoto zoom and at the same time, the wide-angle (26mm) lens captures more in each frame. Its super-macro capabilities capture the subtlest details from as close as one centimeter.

Olympus photos are known worldwide for sharp, vibrant image quality. The compact, precision-crafted lens combines high-refractive, aspherical and extra-dispersion (ED) lens elements to deliver edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity. Whether it is capturing fast-action sports or for everyday use, this sturdy compact body with a wide-angle and telephoto lens provides the versatility to get the job done.

Dual Image Stabilization
The SP-565 Ultra Zoom features an advanced combination of mechanical CCD-shift Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization. CCD-shift Image Stabilization uses built-in electro-gyro sensors to record camera movement and adjust the CCD image sensor. This ensures that light remains centered on the image sensor to maintain image clarity despite a slight movement on the part of the photographer. Digital Image Stabilization Mode boosts ISO sensitivity and shutter speed so that images remain crisp and clear -- free from the blur caused by moving subjects. The combination of the two Image Stabilization Technologies ensures the best image clarity in virtually any shooting environment. Dual Image Stabilization technology enables users to take crisp, clear pictures in virtually any shooting situation -- adjusting for camera shake and a moving subject.
10 Megapixel CCD (Effective)
The 10.0-megapixel CCD image sensor delivers superior image quality capturing the most subtle details that are consistently sharp and vivid, even in large-format prints or when the image is cropped. Recording in both JPEG and RAW file formats, the SP-565 UZ is perfectly suited for a wide range of users -- from new photographers to advanced users who want maximum creative control.
Olympus SP-565 Ultra Zoom 2.5-inch LCD
2.5-inch LCD and Electronic Viewfinder
The SP-565 UZ features a large 2.5-inch LCD screen. Composing shots and sharing images with friends and family is easier than ever thanks to this large, high-resolution LCD. Additionally, the backlight boost button increases the LCD from bright to a super-bright setting, making it easier to capture and view images in challenging environments such as direct sunlight or low-light situations. The SP-565's electronic viewfinder is very sharp and includes a diopter to adjust to one's own eye strength when not wearing glasses.
Face Detection Auto Focus and Auto Exposure
Face Detection Technology tracks faces within the frame and automatically focuses (Face Detection AF) and optimizes exposure (Face Detection AE) for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures. Even if your subjects are moving, the camera continuously tracks your subjects' faces without having to press the shutter button.
Smile Shot
Smile Shot tracks your subject's face to detect a smile and automatically fires off three consecutive shots so you never miss that perfect smile. This feature is great for parents hoping to capture hard-to-predict baby smiles.
Shadow Adjustment Technology
Shooting outdoors in bright daylight can be tricky because of the extreme contrast between dark shadowed areas and bright sunlight areas -- while the human eye is capable of detecting the nuances between dark and light and all the details in between, image sensors traditionally have not been quite as sensitive. The SP-565 Ultra Zoom addresses this challenge head-on with Shadow Adjustment Technology, which compensates for extreme contrast where the shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail. With this technology, users can preview and capture images that have the same contrast as seen with the naked eye. Combined with Face Detection Auto Focus and Auto Exposure, the SP-565 Ultra Zoom captures smiles in shadows without getting a dark image in difficult lighting such as in backlight situations. The technology can also be turned off for any shooting situation where shadows are a key element of a photograph's drama.
Hotshoe for External Flashes
The SP-565 UZ offers a hotshoe for connecting an external flash, providing greater versatility for different lighting effects. Additionally, the SP-565 UZ supports wireless flashes, enabling a user to capture beautiful images even in difficult lighting situations.
TruePic III Image Processor
Olympus' enhanced TruePic III™ Image Processor produces crystal clear photos using all the pixel information for each image to deliver superior picture quality with more accurate colors, true-to-life flesh tones and faster processing speeds. TruePic III also captures sharp images at high ISO settings, which are traditionally associated with increasing image noise or producing grainy photos.
Olympus SP-565 Ultra Zoom
Perfect Shot Preview
The SP-565 UZ features a Perfect Shot Preview mode that enables users to preview and select various photographic effects on a live, multi-frame window on the LCD before snapping the shot. This feature allows users to see precisely what the image will look like when adjustments are made, ensuring users are capturing the exact image they want. It's a great way for novice users to learn about the effects of different photography techniques, such as exposure compensation, white balance and metering.
13.5 fps High-Speed Sequential Shooting
Shoot fast-action sequences like a pro! At the click of a button, you can take several shots in rapid succession to capture every moment of the action. With a burst rate of up to 13.5 fps (with a reduced image size of 3 megapixels), you can freeze moments in time to get the shot you want.
Pre-Capture
The inclusion of Pre-Capture technology, which works in conjunction with High-Speed Sequential Shooting, enables users to capture the action before and after fully pressing the shutter button. Pre-Capture begins working as soon as the focus is locked, automatically archiving five frames in the camera's buffer memory prior to the shutter release -- virtually guaranteeing that none of the action will be missed even if the user's reaction time is slow. Perfect for situations where timing is essential, such as photographing a tennis player serving, children playing or a whale breaching.
33 Selectable Shooting Modes Including Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority Modes
The SP-565 UZ makes it easy to take great photos in a variety of scenarios and lighting situations with 31 shooting modes, including a Multi-Fireworks mode. To activate any of the camera's pre-set modes, simply select the desired mode for portraits, landscapes, night scenes, fast-action and more. To capture the most stunning fireworks displays, this multi-exposure feature overlays the fireworks to create the memory of a lifetime. The inclusion of manual Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority modes gives users versatility and control for optimal performance in any situation. Users can express their creative vision -- adjusting the f-stop for detailed portraits with softened backgrounds, or slowing the exposure speed to create the blurred effect of motion.
TV-Quality Movies With Audio
The inclusion of a speaker and microphone in the camera's body enables users to narrate images with personalized audio captions. In Movie Mode, the SP-565 Ultra Zoom can record VGA-quality (640 x 480) movies of any length at 30 frames-per-second, limited only by the storage capacity of the memory card in the camera.
Perfect Fix In-Camera Editing
Olympus' Perfect Fix feature offers quick solutions for unanticipated image quality issues, which may be caused by several adverse conditions. Lighting Fix can be used to adjust any underexposed areas and Red-Eye Fix can be used to reduce the effects of red-eye sometimes caused by a direct flash. Additional in-camera editing functions can be quickly accessed right in the camera by the touch of a button; features available include resizing, trimming, frames, text options, black and white, and sepia.
Easy Direct Print Capability
The power of PictBridge technology enables photos to be printed directly from the camera to any PictBridge-enabled printer, such as the Olympus P-11 Digital Photo Printer, without using a computer. And the new one-touch printing button makes printing a single-step process. Printing and sharing images has never been easier!
Auto-Connect USB 2.0 High Speed
Transferring images to the computer has never been easier with the Auto-Connect USB 2.0 that does not require software drivers (for most computers/operating systems) for hassle-free and high-speed image downloads.
Olympus Master™ 2 Software
OLYMPUS Master 2 software provides the ultimate in digital imaging management. An intuitive user interface makes downloading to your computer quick and simple, and images are easily organized by folders or albums and searchable by date in Calendar view. Also, with one-click editing tools, such as red-eye removal, images can be touched up before printing or e-mailing. Online support, templates, firmware upgrades and other user services are just a mouse-click away. Use the optional muvee™ Theater Pack to create professional quality slide shows and DVDs from your pictures using any of several built-in templates.
Histogram Function
The SP-565 Ultra Zoom's Histogram function provides real-time access to exposure information so users can confirm exposure before snapping the picture. A histogram displayed on the LCD makes detection of over- and under-exposed areas simple with red and blue highlighting so users can make adjustments.
Built-in Multi-Mode Flash
The SP-565 Ultra Zoom camera has a built-in flash that offers settings to provide a wide range of options:
  • Auto Flash fires automatically in low light or back-light, to help ensure the illumination is appropriate.
  • Red-Eye Reduction Flash Mode emits a series of pre-flashes right before the shutter snaps, allowing the subject's eyes to adjust to the light level of the flash -- reducing the red-eye effect.
  • Fill-In Flash Mode (forced on) adds light to eliminate shadows, for a more natural look in photos when your subject is in both bright light and dark shadow.
  • Fill-In Flash with Red Eye Reduction Mode
  • Slow Slow Synchro 1 Mode for shots requiring long exposure.
  • Slow Slow Synchro 1 with Red Eye Reduction Mode
  • Slow Slow Synchro 2 Mode
  • Flash Off Mode (built-in or external) is available when flash photography is not permitted or to allow for long exposures for shots like sunsets and night scenes.
48MB Available Built-in Internal Memory
You can capture images even when no media card is in the camera.
xD-Picture Card™ Compatibility
Olympus and Fujifilm jointly developed the xD-Picture Card, a new type of memory media with an ultra-compact design about the size of a postage stamp, image storage capacity of up to 8 gigabytes, compatibility with different digital camera brands, and prices that are comparable to current SmartMedia™ cards. The name of the new xD-Picture Card was inspired by the words "eXtreme digital" to signify the excellence of this new memory media for recording, storing, and transporting audio-visual information.

Camera users concerned with compatibility of digital media between different brands of digital cameras will appreciate the xD-Picture Card's versatility. With a CompactFlash adapter the xD-Picture Card can be used with any CompactFlash compatible device for even more possibilities. A USB Reader/Writer provides easy computer connectivity, and a PCMCIA PC Card adapter for laptops and other devices ensures the easy downloading of data.

Although similar in some ways to all flash media, xD-Picture Cards are designed for increased durability and reliability despite their size. The small size of the card allows the design of even smaller, more stylish and powerful digital cameras.

microSD Memory Card Compatible
All Olympus digital point-and-shoot cameras accept xD-Picture Card media. The SP-565 also comes equipped with an adapter which will enable microSD memory cards to be used when capturing images. The microSD cards are emerging in consumer electronic devices, including mobile phones and PDAs. Users can also easily display photos on their HDTVs.
Panorama Mode
Up to 10 frames automatically stitchable with CAMEDIA Master software when using Olympus brand xD-Picture Card.
Digital ESP Multi-Pattern and Center-Weighted Metering
Multi-Point Metering enables up to 8 separate points in the image area to be averaged for proper exposures in the most difficult lighting conditions.
