Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Zoom

Features and Specs | Large Image

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens provides the focal length, maximum aperture and zoom power for capturing everything from fast-action sports to studio portraits. Proably the most popular focal range in Canon's telephoto arsenal and a staple lens for any professional photographer, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens is built for the professional. The body structure of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens has been enhanced to provide better durability and strength without a significant increase in weight. Canon has improved optical performance on the new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens by redesigning the internal elements, incorporating a fluorite element and a fifth UD element. The use of the fluorite element and five UD elements helps to minimize secondary chromatic aberrations and produce better image quality with improved contrast and resolution through the entire zoom range; the end result is an optically precise lens worthy of becoming the leader of Canon's L-series lenses.

Along with its redesigned optical elements, the new lens design features improved AF speed due to a new focusing algorithm and has reduced the minimum focusing distance to 3.9 feet (1.2 meters) through the entire zoom range, allowing photographers to capture tighter portraiture shots in a small studio space. The previous lens model's minimum focusing distance was 4.6 feet (1.4 meters), whereas now photographers can stand nearly 8 inches closer to their subject and achieve sharp focus and tight crops. Canon has also enhanced the Image Stabilization allowing it to compensate for shutter speeds up to four steps slower than 1/focal length, a one step improvement over the previous lens model.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Zoom Key Features

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Zoom Lens
Four-Stop Image Stabilization Technology
Canon's four-stop Image Stabilizer (IS) makes the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM ideal for shooting in low light conditions when using a tripod is not possible. The IS system allows shutter speeds up to four stops slower than normal to be used without causing image blur.
Ultra-Low Dispersion UD Glass
The new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is a professional telephoto zoom lens with high contrast and high resolving power. It is constructed using the finest optics including five UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) glass elements designed to correct chromatic aberrations, resulting in extremely sharp images with high contrast and excellent color rendition throughout the zoom range.
Fluorite (CaF2) Lens Element
The refraction of light differs depending on the wavelength. The point of focus therefore differs depending on the different wavelengths or colors. When the different wavelengths are focused at different points, the colors look smeared. This is called chromatic aberration. The longer the focal length, the more pronounced chromatic aberration becomes. Usually, an achromatic element is used in a lens to correct chromatic aberration. However, normal optical glass can only be corrected for two primary spectral colors. An exception to this limitation is Fluorite, an ideal material. Fluorite, which is crystalline, has abnormally low refraction and dispersion characteristics, which optical glass cannot achieve. It also has anomalous dispersion from the green to blue wavelengths. Canon developed production technologies to manufacture Fluorite. By incorporating Fluorite in lenses, the points of focus of the three primary spectral colors of red, green, and blue all meet at one point for ideal correction of chromatic aberration.
L-Series Quality
The L-Series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-Series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.
Ultrasonic Motor
Powered by Canon's exclusive Ultrasonic (USM) motor for autofocusing, the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM is silent in operation and very quick to focus, even in low-light conditions. There is virtually no whining noise as the lens focuses to distract the subject or draw attention to the photographer. Most important for the photographer in the field, the motor draws minimal power so the camera batteries last longer.
EF Lens Mount
In designing the EF lens mount, Canon engineers gave photographers a lot more than simply a way to quickly attach an interchangeable lens to a camera body. With the elimination of mechanical connections and the incorporation of an electronic interface between the camera and lens, Canon cameras have greater flexibility with regard to incorporating future technologies and future system upgrades. This fact has already been proven with a vast increase in AF speed, increased functionality such as predictive autofocus systems found in EOS cameras, auto-aperture tilt-shift (TS-E) lenses, the use of ultrasonic motors and the development of the Image Stabilizer lens.

The fully electronic mount system has none of the shock, operational noise, abrasion, play, lubrication requirements, slow response, diminished precision caused by lever operation, or design restrictions related to linkage mechanisms used to transfer data. Furthermore, operation and reliability are significantly improved. And, a lens operation self-test system, using the lens' built-in microcomputer, can even warn of malfunctions through the camera's LCD readout to help ensure high reliability.

Full-Time Manual Focus
Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor allows manual focusing without switching out of the auto mode, making this lens ideal for many photographic applications including sports, photojournalism, portraits, and landscapes.
Consistent Aperture Ratio of f/2.8 Throughout The Zoom Range
Designed to maintain a consistent aperture ratio of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens provides photographers with tremendous shooting flexibility. This feature makes it the optimum choice for location and sports photographers who need an assortment of fast lenses but can not afford to weigh themselves down with excessive gear.
8-Blade Circular Aperture
The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens uses an electromagnetically controlled automatic diaphragm designed to maintain nearly circular apertures between f/2.8 and f/5.6. A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
Dust- and Water-Resistant Construction
This EF lens is highly dust- and water-resistant and can therefore be used in harsh conditions without dust and water getting inside.
