Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Zoom

Features and Specs | Large Image

The all-purpose telephoto zoom for EF-S mount EOS cameras, the compact and affordable EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II offers powerful telephoto performance. Its four-stop Image Stabilizer with automatic panning detection effectively suppresses blur in low light. The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens provides a 4.5x zoom ratio and an angle of view equivalent to a 88-400mm lens on a 35mm camera.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Zoom Key Features

Image Stabilization Technology With Automatic Panning Detection
To combat the effects of camera shake, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II incorporates Canon's four-stop compensation Image Stabilizer technology. This allows the use of shutter speeds up to 4 times slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. Automatic panning detection automatically turns off the Image Stabilizer in either the horizontal or vertical direction when following moving subjects.

Canon has developed a series of truly unique lenses equipped with an Image Stabilizer (IS) function that let you capture photos that would otherwise be blurred due to camera movement, greatly expanding the range of handheld-camera photography. In many shooting situations where photographers are not allowed to use a tripod or flash, such as art museums and concert halls, Canon IS lenses are your ticket to sharper pictures.

Blurred pictures due to camera shake become more of a problem when taking pictures in dim light - at dusk, indoors, on a cloudy day. And the chance of getting blurred pictures is greater when using longer focal length lenses that magnify the image and any associated movement. To overcome these problems, Canon developed the world's first SLR lens with a built-in image stabilizer. Electronic signals emitted by vibration-detecting gyro sensors are used to move the image-stabilizing lens group in parallel along the optical axis, providing clear picture quality at all times. Actual shooting tests result in improvement equivalent to using a shutter speed three steps faster.

55-250mm Zoom Range, 88-400mm Equivalent in 35mm Photography
The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II is a telephoto zoom lens combining powerful performance with high image quality. With a focal length equivalent of 88-400mm in 35mm format, it is ideal for photographers seeking an affordable, versatile lens for general-purpose telephoto photography.
One Ultra-Low Dispersion UD Glass Element
UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) glass elements sre designed to correct chromatic aberrations, resulting in extremely sharp images with high contrast and excellent color rendition throughout the zoom range.
Super Spectra Coatings
Canon's Super Spectra coatings combat ghosting and flare by absorbing light that may be reflected off digital camera sensors or internal lens elements. Super Spectra coatings also help ensure accurate color balance and sharp, high-contrast results.
Circular Aperture
This Canon lens features a circular apertures diapragm unit, which uses curved aperture blades to provide for a more rounded opening as the lens is stopped down. A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
Lead-Free Glass
Only environmentally-friendly, lead-free glass is used in the construction of the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II.
EF Lens Mount
In designing the EF lens mount, Canon engineers gave photographers a lot more than simply a way to quickly attach an interchangeable lens to a camera body. With the elimination of mechanical connections and the incorporation of an electronic interface between the camera and lens, Canon cameras have greater flexibility with regard to incorporating future technologies and future system upgrades. This fact has already been proven with a vast increase in AF speed, increased functionality such as predictive autofocus systems found in EOS cameras, auto-aperture tilt-shift (TS-E) lenses, the use of ultrasonic motors and the development of the Image Stabilizer lens.

The fully electronic mount system has none of the shock, operational noise, abrasion, play, lubrication requirements, slow response, diminished precision caused by lever operation, or design restrictions related to linkage mechanisms used to transfer data. Furthermore, operation and reliability are significantly improved. And, a lens operation self-test system, using the lens' built-in microcomputer, can even warn of malfunctions through the camera's LCD readout to help ensure high reliability.
