This sharp and fast 3X optical zoom lens, opening up to f/2.8 at wide-angle settings and f/4.9 at telephoto settings, is ideally suitable for a wide range of photographic applications from landscapes and snapshots to portraits and macro at a working distance of just over an inch from the subject.
- Optical Image Stabilizer
- Canon's sophisticated Optical Image Stabilizer technology uses miniature gyroscopic sensors to detect motion and generate a corrective signal. An image stabilizing lens group along the optical axis is shifted in response to the detected motion, providing effective cancellation of unwanted lens movement and vibration. The benefits are obvious and enormous: in still photography, the camera can now be handheld at slower shutter speeds without resulting in blurred images. Handheld video footage is smoother -- free of the unsteadiness that can make viewing home movies tiresome.
The PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH's Lens-Shift type optical image stabilization system is based on advancements made in the development of Canon's EF lenses and video lenses. Unlike electronic or digital image stabilization systems that typically degrade image quality, the PowerShot SD950 IS digital camera's lens shift-type preserves maximum optical performance.
- Exclusive Canon UA Lens
- The UA Lens (Ultra High Refractive Index Aspherical Lens) is a Canon exclusive: a glass-molded Aspherical lens with an ultra high refractive index that delivers bright, clear shots. This special glass allows a compactness unusual in a wide-angle lens, contributing to the SD790 IS's impressively slim profile.
Canon's heritage as an imaging company dates back over 70 years to the company's founding in 1934. Since then, Canon has worked hard to perfect the process of creating extremely high-quality optics for its line of imaging products and is now the world's largest manufacturer of cameras and lenses. Canon is a global leader in optical design, with many advanced and original technologies that allow Canon users to achieve the sharpest images possible.
- DIGIC III Image Processor
- The brain behind this beauty is DIGIC III, the newest iteration of Canon's ultra-efficient (and proprietary) image processor. Canon's exclusive DIGIC III Image Processor builds on the technological superiority of DIGIC and DIGIC II, taking image quality, performance and speed to new levels. It is the DIGIC III chip that accounts for the PowerShot SD790 IS camera's higher performance levels including faster start up, autofocus and shutter response times; improved maximum processing speed; and of course, enhanced image quality and more efficient power consumption; resulting in extended battery life under typical shooting conditions.
Canon developed the proprietary DIGIC (Digital Imaging Integrated Circuit) Image Processor specifically for use with its line of digital cameras. The technology combines the jobs of image processing and camera function control into one chip. Because it was specifically designed for use in digital cameras, it is also capable of handling JPEG compression/expansion; memory card control; LCD/Video control and processing; gain control (control of CCD signal amplification); Auto Exposure; Auto Focus; Auto White Balance control and most other functions of the camera. The result is a product that offers faster and more powerful auto focus than ever before, faster image processing, better image quality and longer battery life.
- Motion Detection Technology
- Canon's new Motion Detection Technology makes it easier than ever to capture a clear, sharp image every time. As you compose your photos and snap away, it automatically optimizes ISO settings based on changes in brightness, changes between frames, and motion detected by Optical Image Stabilizer, Face Detection, AE Function and AF Technology. All you need is to set High ISO Auto mode and the result is stunning photos with every shot. When the camera detects a subject in motion, it automatically sets a higher ISO number and faster shutter speed to reduce blur. When subject or camera movement is not detected, lower ISOs are set automatically. The result is beautiful, sharp images with great color and low digital noise.
- Advanced Face Detection AF/AE/FE/WB Technology and Red-Eye Correction
- Your most cherished images often feature faces, and Canon's advanced Face Detection Technology gives every face its best chance to shine. The PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH camera features the latest and most advanced generation of Genuine Canon Face Detection Technology. The technology finds the face(s) in the frame -- whether posed for a family portrait, candidly capturing friends and fun, or spontaneously snapping a toddler's expression of triumphant glee as two halting steps -- and ensures these faces are in focus and properly exposed, with or without flash. In addition to focus and exposure control, the camera's Face Detection feature captures truer, more accurately lit skin tones (and hence more beautifully rendered pictures) thanks to Canon's improved Face Detection White Balance. This ensures that both flesh tones and backgrounds are rendered with natural, realistic hues. Face Selector can detect up to 35 faces with a single press of a button. Face Selector AF lets you track a specific face, retain focus even as it moves, and press the shutter button when you're ready. AF Point Zoom lets you zoom in on a selected face to check its expression and make adjustments without missing the best shot.
- ISO 1600 Sensitivity
- Thanks to the DIGIC III chip's more aggressive noise reduction, the SD790 IS is able to shoot at ISO equivalent speed ratings from 80 to as high as 1600. This increased sensitivity at the top-end allows users to select faster shutter speeds, adding additional stability and reducing the danger of camera shake and subject blur during hand held, low-light photography.
- Image Inspection Tool
- The Image Inspection Tool feature zooms in on faces automatically during playback to make it even easier to check facial expressions.
- Noise Reduction
- Experienced photographers know that high ISO speeds can coincide with increased levels of noise: aberrant or stray signals that degrade image quality. With Canon's exclusive DIGIC III Image Processor, there is no need for compromise. DIGIC III offers a major boost in noise reduction signal processing to compensate for the higher ISO settings it enables.
- Canon iSAPS Technology
- Over the past 68 years, Canon has accumulated a vast amount of photographic data and know-how and used it to create some of the most innovative camera products in the marketplace. Now, using that same data and know-how, Canon has developed an exclusive technology called iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) that can predict certain camera settings such as focusing distance, exposure and optimum white balance based on zoom focal length, overall light level and tonal distribution data. Canon refers to this collective data as "Photographic Space." By incorporating iSAPS technology into its PowerShot line, the cameras can analyze a scene just before the image is made and in doing so, increase the speed and precision of the camera's autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance.
- MMC, SD and SDHC-Compatible Digital ELPH
- The Canon PowerShot SD790 IS uses the incredibly tiny SD memory cards. Get expanded capacity and high-speed writing from a memory card the size of a postage stamp. It is also compatible with the new higher-capacity SDHC cards and with MultiMediaCard.
- AF Point Zoom
- Turn on the AF Point Zoom feature to see an enlargement of the focus position when you press the shutter halfway for focus (when Face Detect AF or one-point AF is in use). This feature makes it easy to capture the perfect facial expression of your subject, or check for precise focus in macro shots.
- Red-Eye Correction
- New technology combines with Face Detection to allow this PowerShot camera to detect and remove red-eye, as images are played back on the LCD monitor. This model can even detect and remove red-eye as photographs are taken.
- Four Movie Modes Including 30 fps VGA and Time Lapse
- The PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH is appointed with a full-range of movie features including a built-in microphone and speaker. Among the options is high-resolution VGA (640 x 480) 30 fps VGA mode. Time Lapse is a new feature that mimics the effect of time lapse photography. Clips are recorded at one or two fps, then played back at 15 fps for a fascinating effect. The compact movie mode -- designed with e-mail attachments in mind -- captures a maximum of three minutes of recording at 15 fps and a resolution of 160 x 120 pixels.
