Sporting a new look, the PowerShot A1000 IS digital camera combines the robust feature-set users have come to expect from Canon's point-and-shoot digital cameras, coupled with a sleek design, giving a slimmer, lighter and more compact body to the PowerShot A-Series camera line. The Canon PowerShot A1000 IS digital camera has a 10-megapixel resolution, Canon's DIGIC III Image Processor and is equipped with a 4x Optical Zoom lens, and a 2.5-inch LCD screen. The camera allows for close-up shots for those important occasions where you can't be right on top of the action and a zoom may be required -- all with the ease of popping in two AA batteries so a shot is never missed. The PowerShot A1000 IS is equipped with an optical image stabilized lens to help reduce camera shake, and High ISO Auto which takes into account the subject's movement, which helps to provide crisp and clear images regardless of how far the zoom extends.
Canon PowerShot A-Series cameras remain perfect for families purchasing their first digital camera, travelers who don't want to worry about charging their batteries while on the go, and new parents looking for an affordable, family-friendly camera that perfectly captures special moments. At the same time, a revamped design also makes the A1000 IS camera the ultimate choice for the style-conscious user. The PowerShot A1000 IS digital camera evokes elegance with its gentle curved grip, and offers the opportunity for individual expression via its four color choices: gray, blue, gold and purple.

- 4x Optical/4x Digital/24x Combined Zoom
- The PowerShot A1000 IS digital camera is equipped with a 4x 35-140mm (35mm format equivalent) optical zoom lens with Canon optics for sharp images. With its 10.0 megapixel CCD and 4x optical zoom lens, you can capture intricate details. The optical zoom combines with a 4x digital zoom for a total of 16x zoom power.
Canon's heritage as an imaging company dates back over 70 years to the company's founding in 1934. Since then, Canon has worked hard to perfect the process of creating extremely high-quality optics for its line of imaging products and is now the world's largest manufacturer of cameras and lenses. Canon is a global leader in optical design, with many advanced and original technologies that allow Canon users to achieve the sharpest images possible.
- Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)
- The extended zoom range of this camera makes optical image stabilization (OIS) essential. Canon's lens shift OIS provides an effective antidote to camera shake, particularly at longer zoom lengths or during long exposures when even the slightest hand-held shake is magnified to picture-blurring proportions. Superior to electronic image stabilization systems that simply use software to mask movement, OIS actually shifts the lens proportionately to compensate for unwanted motion, making it easier to snap great images. The OIS found in Canon PowerShot digital cameras is based on technology developed for Canon's renowned high-end professional EOS SLR cameras.
- 2.5-inch LCD Monitor
- Whether it is raising your camera above your head to get a shot of your child at her first dance recital or dropping your camera below your knees to watch your baby crawl for the first time, the large 2.5-inch, 115,000-pixel, color TFT LCD screen increases the ability to get those hard to view, but essential shots.
- SD/SDHC-Compatible
- The Canon PowerShot A1000 IS uses the incredibly tiny SD memory cards. Get expanded capacity and high-speed writing from a memory card the size of a postage stamp. As an added convenience, the A1000 IS also accommodates MultiMedia MMC and MMC+ memory cards, as well as standard SD memory cards and the new, high-capacity SDHC memory cards. This way, you do not have to carry around multiple memory cards in order to be able to continue to save those special moments during extended vacations or high-photo-taking adventures. Canon PowerShot owners can travel in sleek style.
- Advanced Face Detection AF/AE/FE Technology and Red-Eye Correction
- With Canon's new Face Detection AF/AE/FE function, the camera can detect, lock on, and track multiple human faces in a scene. The face detection algorithm automatically prioritizes and selects faces (based on Canon's Intelligent Scene Analysis/iSAPS technology). It will then optimize the focus, exposure and flash to help ensure the best possible results for even easier picture taking moments. The result is flattering portraits and group shots where all of the subjects are in clearer focus and accurately exposed.
Compared to previous Canon cameras with Face Detection technology, the PowerShot A1000 IS IS digital camera adds several improvements, including the ability to use the function for movies as well as still images, the ability to detect faces that are further away or not aimed directly at the camera, and better control of flash exposure. Working with the camera's Face Detection technology, Canon's new Red-eye Correction feature helps detect and corrects, during playback mode, that bothersome by-product of flash photography. Images can be corrected manually while viewing photos on the LCD screen to help vanquish red-eye, once and for all. Because most images will no longer require laborious post-processing with a computer, the in-camera Red-eye Correction feature is ideal for direct printing.
- 10.0 Megapixels
- The PowerShot A1000 IS features a 1/2.3-inch CCD image sensor with 10.0-megapixel resolution. The A1000 IS captures 3648 x 2736 pixel images with exceptional detail and color fidelity.
- DIGIC III Image Processor
- The brain behind this beauty is DIGIC III, the newest iteration of Canon's ultra-efficient (and proprietary) image processor. Canon's exclusive DIGIC III Image Processor builds on the technological superiority of DIGIC and DIGIC II, taking image quality, performance and speed to new levels. It is the DIGIC III chip that accounts for the PowerShot A1000 IS camera's higher performance levels including faster start up, autofocus and shutter response times; improved maximum processing speed; and of course, enhanced image quality and more efficient power consumption; resulting in extended battery life under typical shooting conditions.
Canon developed the proprietary DIGIC (Digital Imaging Integrated Circuit) Image Processor specifically for use with its line of digital cameras. The technology combines the jobs of image processing and camera function control into one chip. Because it was specifically designed for use in digital cameras, it is also capable of handling JPEG compression/expansion; memory card control; LCD/Video control and processing; gain control (control of CCD signal amplification); Auto Exposure; Auto Focus; Auto White Balance control and most other functions of the camera. The result is a product that offers faster and more powerful auto focus than ever before, faster image processing, better image quality and longer battery life.
- ISO 1600 Sensitivity and High ISO Auto Mode
- Thanks to the DIGIC III chip's more aggressive noise reduction, the A1000 IS is able to shoot at ISO equivalent speed ratings from 80 to as high as 1600. This increased sensitivity at the top-end allows users to select faster shutter speeds, adding additional stability and reducing the danger of camera shake and subject blur during hand held, low-light photography. What's more, the A1000 IS digital camera offers users the option of Canon's High ISO Auto Mode. All you need is to set High ISO Auto mode and the result is stunning photos with every shot. When the camera detects a subject in motion, it automatically sets a higher ISO number and faster shutter speed to reduce blur. When subject or camera movement is not detected, lower ISOs are set automatically. The result is beautiful, sharp images with great color and low digital noise.
- Easy Mode For Shooting and Easy Playback Mode
- When you're taking pictures, the only thing you want to think about is your subject. That's why the PowerShot A1000 IS is equipped with Canon's Easy Mode that works in the background to handle all the technical details for you. Now you can relax and concentrate on choosing just the right angle, capturing the perfect expression, framing your shot perfectly. To make showing off your images just as carefree, the A1000 IS features the new Easy Playback mode that makes viewing single images and slideshows on the camera effortless -- even if you're new to digital photography.
- Print/Share Button
- Located on the backside of the PowerShot A1000 IS digital camera is the Print/Share button. This button simplifies and accelerates direct printing to compatible Canon and PictBridge-enabled printers and one-touch image transfer to Windows computers for use with image processing programs, uploading to the Internet, or as e-mail attachments. When the camera is connected to a compatible printer or computer, the Print/Share button illuminates to let the user know to press the Print/Share button to begin the printing or downloading process.
- 17 Shooting Modes, Including Special Scene Modes
- The Canon A1000 IS offers a wide variety of shooting modes to optimize the camera's performance based on user preferences or shooting conditions. These modes include:
- Auto - The camera chooses all the settings so you can concentrate on your subject.
- Easy - Keep the image quality as high as possible for fail-proof images.
- Program - Access advanced exposure compensation features while shooting mostly automatically.

- Sunset - Retain all the vivid colors of a sunset along with optimum white balance.
- Night Scene - The camera automatically and intelligently selects the aperture/shutter speed combination based on the shooting conditions.
- Aquarium - Permits low light, no-flash photography in situations where using a flash would ruin a picture by bouncing back off aquarium glass or other reflective surfaces.
- ISO 3200 - Expands your ability to shoot in even darker settings without using the flash, and helps capture well-exposed images.
- Direct Printing
- Direct Printing significantly expands the appeal of the PowerShot A1000 IS digital camera by making it simple, quick and convenient to produce high-quality photos without the need for a personal computer. Beyond its Direct Print capability with Canon's Card Photo Printers and acclaimed Canon Direct Photo Printers, the camera is also compatible with PictBridge, an industry protocol that offers the flexibility of direct printing to other brands of PictBridge compatible printers.
The PowerShot A1000 IS digital camera supports Exif Print, a worldwide standard that transfers important camera settings and data from the camera to the printer ensuring the photos you print will look true to life. Moreover, DPOF 1.1 (Digital Print Order Format) lets users specify the images to be printed or execute batch printing of selected images.
Canon's Direct Print options -- in conjunction with Canon CP-type printers -- permit creation of passport style ID prints on 4x6 paper as well various print sizes (selectable on the PowerShot A1000 IS's menu). Direct Print also offers users the opportunity to print thumbnail frame sequences from movie clips generated in the camera and output to a Canon CP Printer. The camera's Postcard Date Imprint mode provides a user selectable date stamp that can be imprinted in the corner of a picture, similar to those found on 35mm "QD"(Quartz Date) cameras. When selected, the Postcard mode also deliberately crops the image creating a slightly longer rectangle to fill a 4 x 6 postcard. When shooting in Postcard mode the camera automatically reduces the resolution to 1600 x 1200 with fine compression (an ideal setting for 4 x 6 images with no need for the user to manually set the resolution and compression).
- Direct Transfer
- Canon's Direct Transfer function offers users five options to download images to Windows computers covering everything from all images in the camera, all new images in the camera, user-selected individual images, images selected for batch printing and even a setting to create Windows Wallpaper from an image.
- VGA Movie Recording
- The PowerShot A1000 IS is appointed with a full-range of movie features including a built-in microphone and speaker. With a highly flexible movie mode, you can create the movie that's perfect for any application. Select from VGA (640 x 480 pixels) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels), with frame rates of 30 fps and 15 fps for recording up to 1 hour or 1GB. Plus Compact Movie Mode (QQVGA; 160 x 120 pixels) records at 15 fps for up to 3 minutes.
- Built-in Flash
- The PowerShot A1000 IS digital camera has a built-in flash with automatic red-eye reduction setting and a maximum range of about 14 feet.

So the camera is equipped with selectable high-precision White Balance Settings to handle a full range of shooting conditions. There are 5 presets: Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent and Fluorescent H. Plus there's also Custom and Auto settings.
- Selectable Light Metering
- The PowerShot A1000 IS provides a range of Canon's highly advanced exposure features that offer greater control and greater convenience. Selectable Light Metering offers three settings. In the Evaluative setting, the camera reads multiple points across the frame for optimal overall exposure. The Spot Metering setting concentrates on a single area in the center of the image for greater precision in high contrast situations. Centerweighted Averaging Metering, with emphasis on the center of the viewfinder, averages metering out over the entire picture area.
