Replacing the 486 compact ball, the Manfrotto 496RC2 Compact Ball Head is strong enough to take 35mm SLR cameras with medium lenses, and light medium format cameras. It has a new friction control knob plus a smart ratchet locking knob for 360-degree pan and plus/minus 90-degree tilt movements. The 496 features an all-aluminum construction with a black finish. Camera attachment is via a 60mm platform with 1/4-inch male thread. Head to tripod attachment is 3/8-inch female.

A smart ratcheting locking lever allows the user to place it in a comfortable position in order to use it in the most convenient way. Just pull it outwards, put it in the best working position, and then release it. This makes working with the head easier and quicker. The locking lever securely locks the head both in the +90 degrees and -90 degrees ball positions and in the 360 degrees pan movements.
